Road Trip Essentials ~ Travelling With Your Dog

Today I’m sharing all the doggie essentials that we couldn’t live without when travelling by car with Tilly. To summarise: we don’t travel light 😂

Tags & collars 🐾

It’s even more important to have your dog wear identification when travelling.

Here in the UK, the law states dogs in public places must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner. When away from home, I’d advise having your dog wear a tag with your mobile phone number also, just in case you are separated. Having a spare with you saves a trip to the engravers!

Snacks for the journey 🍗

Depending on your tolerance of smells… a time consuming chew will keep your dog amused during a boring car ride. Tilly’s favourite right now is lamb lung (we roll the windows down!).

I’m still working through chews I bought at Crufts! We stock up from our local pet shop, shows, JR Pets and Devil Dood Designs.

Car safety gear ⚠

The Highway Code states that drivers are responsible for making sure animals are suitably restrained in a vehicle so they can’t distract or injure you/themselves during an emergency stop.

We secure Tilly with a seat belt clip attached to a harness. Our current harness isn’t crash tested, so I’m looking into getting another, I’d love to know if any of you have crash tested ones, and where you got them from?

Another item we use is our car hammock, (from Kurgo) which goes over the back two seats and blocks Miss T from getting into the front seat, as well stopping her from falling into the foot well if I slam on the breaks.

Something that we always have stowed in the car is a dog first aid kit. Just as you would for humans, this contains a few medical essentials should an emergency happen.

Ours includes;

• A range of bandages, compress, and tape
• Alcohol Swabs to disinfect small wounds or tick bites
• 1 Disposable Syringe 20 ml: for eye rinses and administering medication
• 1 Pair of plastic Tweezers: to remove small foreign bodies (e.g. bee sting, broken glass)
• 1 Pair Latex Gloves: self-protection
• 1 Flea- and Lice Comb
• 1 Pair of Tick Tweezers
• 1 Dog Muzzle loop
• Antibacterial powder/spray

Water & Food 💦

Traffic and delays can often add hours to a trip. Making sure I have a couple of emergency rations of food, and extra water always comes in handy if we get caught in a delay at dinner time.

I can’t always keep Tilly’s raw food in the car, so we opt for a freeze dried complete when travelling, or when I’ve forgotten to defrost her meal (bad human!).

Tilly has being doing really well on both K9 Natural, and Orijen freeze dried. All you have to do is add a bit of water.

A little bit of home 🏡

Tilly on the whole is a good girl in the car. We like to bring a familiar toy, and her bed to settle her quickly.

Don’t forget these essentials too;

• Poo bags
• Treats
• Wipes
• Lead/s
• Towels
• Cooling coat or a warm layer depending on the weather

Dog friendly service stations 🛣

Breaks are essential for humans and dogs. We like to stop every 2-3 hours.

By searching specific road names, or areas you can quickly get an idea of what the service stations are like. Things to look for include; green spaces for toileting, access to fresh water, bins, bonus points if they allow dogs inside!

A website I have found really useful is Driving With Dogs, where you can browse by road.
